♬♬♬ It’s the most wonderful time of the year… ♬♬♬
I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.
Read the transcript or listen here.
I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.

ALSO, Margaret and I are each giving away 12 cookbooks (!!!). To enter, leave a comment below: tell me what your favorite cookbook is for gifting (or just your favorite) and a little bit about why. Now, go double your chances to win by copying your comment into the comment box over at Margaret’s website.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.

Category #4: Nose-to-Tail

Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

Who doesn’t love cookbooks?
Since I was a pre-teen I loved the comfort of a cookbook…there is something so warm about a shelf of cookbooks in the kitchen, whether they are brand new or splattered with dough. I think a home without a cookbook is so sad….
I personally love Kenji’s Food Lab book. It is a little bit more on the expensive side, but it is such a wonderful way to explain cooking techniques to those of us science nerds who love to learn about ‘why’ and ‘how’ things work! Thank you for the great post! I have some new books on my list!
I don’t know how to copy what I said on Margaret’s web site, but let’s just say ditt0! Great list of cool books!
I can’t count how many cookbooks that I have either, but I don’t have any of these. One of my favorites is Nourishing Traditions because it started me on my eat “real” food journey. Chrissie Tiegen’s first cookbook is one of the few cookbooks that I have actually made numerous recipes from. Since I have an organic garden, a lot of my books have recipes for unusual vegetables.
The cookie Book, because I love to make cookies!
When I was in culinary school I had occasion to write to Dorie Greenspan encouraging her to include weights of ingredients in addition to other measurements. In school we always formulated recipes by weight so when we wanted to increase of decrease the number of servings it was just a simple adjustment. For more complicated calculation we would also use baker’s percentage. Dorie had the grace and kindness to respond and to provide encouragement. Since then I have been a fan. If chosen I would certainly make her book my favorite. But as an avid reader of recipes, any of the 12 would be welcome.
Have a happy holiday.
I don’t have a favorite!! I guess of I could only keep one of my cookbooks, it would be America’s Test Kitchen 15-year compilation. It’s every recipe from 15 years of Cook’s Illustrated.
I haven’t had a new cookbook in eons. Maybe today is the day?
“Sister Pie” looks like it would be very interesting to me! I love pies! They all look especially wonderful! Thank you!
I love to gift the cookbook “Bread Toast Crumbs” and two pyrex bowls for baking to young family members and friends. It is a fun and easy way to introduce bread baking and getting great results. Very gratifying. So far, I’ve gifted about 10 books and bowls and intend to do more this Christmas. I am 64 years old and have enjoyed cooking and baking all my life. My Grandmother and Mother taught me, and it is a joyful memory I will always cherish. I love the idea of the bread recipe being one that Alexandra’s Mom gave her. Happy Holidays!
Marilyn,
That is a great idea, my favorite book. I make My Mothers Peasant Bread all the time for gift giving and community fund raising bake sales. It also won a blue ribbon at the county fair. Thanks for the great idea.
My favorite keeps changing! Love to find vintage cookbooks at yard sales and gift them.
“Israeli Soul” I love ethnic food! This would be a present to myself! All these books would be welcome at my home and kitchen!
Cookbooks for all times:
American Wholefood Cuisine, one of the earliest vegetarian cookbooks and considered “the vegetarian Joy of Cooking.” Still (or maybe even more) relevant than it was when it came out in 1978.
My favorite cookbooks are written by Crescent Dragonwagon, a vegetarian who writes humorously and has great recipes. Her “Cornbread Gospel” is my absolute favorite.
My new favorite cookbook is comfort in an instant. The recipes are all approachable and simple enough for weeknight meals in my instant pot. It’s brought back my joy in cooking weeknight suppers for my kids.
I love cookbooks so to pick just one would be impossible!! Fingers are crossed to win!!
Plenty is my favorite, but I have many of the ones here on my wish list! I love to gift cookbooks that are somehow personalized to the recipient.
So many great cookbooks! The Charlie Bird Farro salad sounds like I must try it, and the salted maple pie, and so many more!
My favorite cookbook to give away is Scratch by Maria Rodale. I found this cookbook when I was first getting started really cooking often, and loved it. I tend to give cookbooks for Weddings and so I feel like it’s good for all skill levels and they won’t already have it like with most “newlywed” cookbooks.
I always reach for James Beard’s American Cookery!
Anything Thai love trying new Thai recipes !
I think my new favorite is America’s Test Kitchen Cookbook 2001-2019….but the ones I have gifted most are probably assorted Moose wood ones.
It’s challenging to pick one cookbook — impossible, even. There are so many I regularly use, including books by James Beard, Ina Garten, Rlizabeth David, Dorie Greenspan, Amanda Hesser, Nigel Slater, Alison Roman, etc. I did buy a friend a copy of “Rose’s Baking Basics” by Rose Levy Berenbaum as he has expressed an interest in learning to bake. I love all of my cookbooks and use them all. If they don’t get used they get passed along to someone who will love them.
Ruth Reichl’s “My Kitchen Year” for the read and the recipes. I love to gift “Bread Toast Crumbs” with 1 quart bowls…a starter kit!
count me in
This has been a good year for cookbooks, for sure. So many that I’ve been taking them out of the library and only buying them if I take them out three times and still want to use them. Nik Sharma’s “Season” and “Now & Again” are among my favorites so far.
I love to give young, new cooks ‘Julia’s Kitchen Wisdom’ by Julia Child, I received it from my mother and it is the perfect guide for a new cook, or even a seasoned cook. Simple instructions and never fail recipes. Love it
My favorite cookbook to give “new cooks” is the original Barefoot Contessa. I own all her books but the original contains so many wonderful, simplified recipes. I must’ve made almost every recipe in that book!
Such a fun Give-a-way! Ok, some fav cookbooks… there are so many gorgeous cookbooks now that I leave several out as coffee table decor. I treasure these gorgeous books and beautiful full page pictures of the recipes.
A Cooks Atelier is a beauty ( but I have not made anything from it yet)
Love & Lemons is a solid good choice with healthy recipes and beautiful pics.
The Vanilla Bean (desserts) is a winner for the best chocolate chip cookie recipe along with loads more trcioes that are wonderful!
Food 52 is a terrific basic that covers everything successfully and recipes are excellent.
Half Baked Harvest, What Katie Ate, love Real Food are all great.
I love receiving my emails from Alexandra’s Kitchen. Those recipes are most often on my Pinterest board.
Happy Holidays xoxo
I too am a cookbook junkie. I enjoy looking at then as much as I do cooking from them. My daughter introduced me to Christine Tosi of Milk Bar fame about 2 years ago. I LOVE her first cookbook and have made many of the cakes. The All About Cake Cookbook is on my Christmas list. My daughter has it and I have oohed and ahhhed at many of the pages anxious to bake. So maybe I will win the book before Santa gets a chance to bring it!!! That would be fantastic….Bake on!!
