12 Days of Cookbooks (!!!) — Chatting About The Season’s New Books with Margaret Roach

I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.

I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.

Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

My favorite cookbook for giving is Tapas: The Little Dishes of Spain by Penelope Casas. Wonderful and easy to make dishes that have been a hit for my guests every time I have served them. I recommend everyone check out this book.

My favorite cookbook at the moment is Smitten Kitchen Every Day. I hate eating the same thing days in a row, so I love having a collection of simpler, quicker recipes for busy or lazy nights!
I love cookbooks in general, but cookbooks with beautiful photography are the best! Especially when they have picture of each dish so you get inspired by the photo and also know what the final product should look like!
I am a big fan of all the Ottolenghi cookbooks. I have a large vegetable garden, and I am always looking for new ways to prepare vegetables – I have found such creative and delicious recipes in the Ottolenghi cookbooks. His recipe for sweet potatoes roasted in an orange juice, vinegar and bitters reduction is life-altering!
My son is a chef and I traditionally gift him a cookbook for Christmas. He has his favorite chefs, but sometimes I surprise him with someone different or a new genre of cooking
The cookbook that I fell in love with and that continues to inspire is Bread Toast Crumbs! I got a copy for my mom so we can both enjoy the recipient and pictures and can share our cooking adventures! I will definitely be gifting it again!
I love giving away Ottolenghi’s cookbooks because I love his flavors so much — I just bought Simple for a White Elephant exchange and totally want to keep it for myself.

What can I say: I’m addicted to books, and cookbooks hold special place in my heart and my kitchen. I find Ottolenghi’s books touching on my middle eastern sentiments from my time I spent there during university years. It brings back all the familiar flavors and let’s me introduce them to my family.
I like to give Bread, Toast, Crumbs. I’m not kissing up, I swear! I brought the bread to Haunakkah, a neighborhood x-mas party, and to another neighbor’s baby shower. Now I am required to bring it everywhere, or all occasions. To share the love, I give the cookbook!!
Once I lent the cookbook of my mother’s recipes. The only thing I wanted for Christmas was a book with her recipes; it took her two years to write out most of her favorite dishes. Otherwise, it is the old Betty Crocker cookbook, one that has the “from scratch” recipes.
One of my favorite recent cookbooks is Bravetart. Lots of great recipes.
I have two favorite cookbooks. Barefoot Contessa Parties is one. I love the great party ideas and recipes. Also Bread Toast Crumbs is my other because the bread recipes have changed the way I make bread. I can make bread on a weeknight now!

Smitten Kitchen Every Day is my current favorite!
So hard to choose! I think Small Victories has been my favorite cookbook lately. The lasagna recipe is a labor of love, but so worth all the time and effort.
Older editions of “The Joy of Cooking”, look very retro and stylish in fancy kitchens. Plus, it is useful to look up obscure dishes or techniques.
Love Ina Garten books, “Half Baked Harvest” has been my go to for the last year and the wave of cookbooks by today’s food.bloggers including “Bread, Toadt, Crumbs”.
I have gifted Magnolia Table to a number of friends. The recipes are family friendly and not too complicated.
My favorite cookbook to give is Bread Toast Crumbs. No I’m not trying to get extra entries! I really like showing people how easy it is to get homemade bread on the table.
How to cook everything
My favorite cookbook is “Bread, Toast, Crumbs” on my Kindle. I find inspiration for a variety of meals, but my favorite recipe to make is the Peasant Bread. My granddaughter loves it!
I use to give Joy of Cooking as a gift, then I gave the Charlotte NC Jr League cookbook “Dining by Fireflies” the most recent book I have given is Ina’s Cooking for Jeffrey. I love regional cookbooks!

Minimalist Baker is my go-to cookbook. I’ve made so many recipes out of that book, and am always impressed. I think its an easy and approchable introduction to vegan cooking.
Ina’s Cook Like a Pro Book is on my Christmas list and would make a good gift to family members who have all of her books. They are always great, simple recipes that are reliable and classic.
