12 Days of Cookbooks (!!!) — Chatting About The Season’s New Books with Margaret Roach

I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.

I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.

Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

I’ve used the cookbook “Good Housekeeping” for many, many years. I have given a copy to each of my daughters and daughters-in-law. It has easy to follow recipes and each recipe has a photo to help visualize the dish you are preparing. It also has suggested menus for the first time hostess to help prepare for parties.
I am loving The Red Truck Bakery cookbook!

My go-to cookbook for everyday cookies is Nancy Baggett’s “All American Cookie Book.” Love it!
I love gifting Smitten Kitchen cookbooks—the recipes work and the prose is delightful!

The Susan Branch Christmas from the Heart of the Home cookbook. I love the whimsy of how it is written but it also has some really good recipes. The lemon squares are to die for and are, hands down, my husband’s favorite bar.
Southern Sideboards is my favorite. It’s a classic in the south, and every recipe is a gem.
One of my favorites is actually yours…Bread Toast Crumbs. I absolutely love the Peasant bread recipe!
For gifting I like to give the second Pioneer Woman cookbook. It has a mix of everything.
A friend recently gifted me a signed copy of Bread Toast Crumbs so that is currently my favorite. I made the Quinoa Flaxseed and Cheddar Parmesan breads last week. Can’t wait to try more! So delicious and easy!

For gifting it’s River Road Recipes from The Junior League of Baton Rouge. It’s classic Louisiana cooking.
I always gifted my mom subscriptions to Cook’s Country & Cook’s Illustrated, but she is gone now. My husband enjoys your mom’s peasant bread so much it’s the “go to” bread in our house. The Cook90 book sounds intriguing. I am returning to work soon(as soon as I find a job) and could use a everyday, fast cookbook to help me.

Any Cookbook that can teach me a new skill…I would love to learn how to can. And any cookbook that uses simple ingredients to get a good meal on the table. Thanx for the chance to win.
I use a lot of the skinnytaste cookbooks and her website a ton but lately I’ve been trying to stick with Whole 30 and using those books.
Picking a favorite cookbook is like choosing a favorite child! I love the voice that goes with the recipes in any of Nigella Lawson’s books though, in particular- Forever Summer.
The Oh She Glows Cookbook is on the list this year.
My favorite cookbooks for gifting and also my favorite cookbooks are (yours!) Bread, Toast, Crumbs because I am addicted to baking bread and love your approach that I have found anyone can master, and the Once Upon a Chef cookbook which I think is just the perfect cookbook for making meals for the family. The Season cookbook on your list looks fantastic!

Actually – I love your cook book. I make a batch of the peasant bread and divide it into 4 smaller bowls and distribute to friends fresh from the oven. Who doesn’t love a piping hot loaf of bread? My favorite is the flax seed version – SOOOO good. And I just added Skinnytaste One & Done to my Xmas list. Thanks for the suggestion.
One of our favorite books is The Frugal Gourmet by Jeff Smith
My first inspiration cookbook was Martha Stewart’s Entertaining-
It taught me to prepare dishes instead of cook. It inspired me to try new things not only with my family but when entertaining. It encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and cook for family, friends and large parties.
I love cookbooks and trying new things. There are so many wonderful foods out there and so many ways to prepare them.
I’m a long-time vegan but can’t wait to read Sister Pie cover to cover!

Anything by Deborah Madison! I find her books so thoughtful. She has such a wealth of knowledge and experience — it’s nice to know I’ll always find something wonderful in her cookbooks. I had the privilege of meeting her a few years ago and she remembered the special ingredients in one of my favorite recipes from a book published in 1997, Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, — amazing!
My very favorite cookbook these days is “Plenty More”.

I love my Fat cookbook. It discusses the uses of various kinds of fat historically and why they work in certain instances opposed to others. Then there are recipes. So good!!
