♬♬♬ It’s the most wonderful time of the year… ♬♬♬
I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.
Read the transcript or listen here.
I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.

ALSO, Margaret and I are each giving away 12 cookbooks (!!!). To enter, leave a comment below: tell me what your favorite cookbook is for gifting (or just your favorite) and a little bit about why. Now, go double your chances to win by copying your comment into the comment box over at Margaret’s website.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.

Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

Together because I love the concept and what the cookbook stands for. It also seems like there would be a large and exciting assortment of cuisines and recipes!
Favorite Cookbook? Impossible for me to decide. I must admit I am fond of BTC – gifted it to 2 of my friends last year.
My favorite book to give is “Americas Test Kitchen” all years up to current. They put out a new one every year. I have always had good luck with all the recipes I have made from it and I also learn a lot of valuable cooking information and methods from this book. A.T.K. also offers the best tested cooking equipment and product comparisons which I find very helpful.
I can’t help gifting Mastering the Art of French Cooking. It’s such a classic, and I’m a big believer in the magic of Julia Child being a catching thing. We could all use a bit more of that in the kitchen, I think!
Skinnytaste is my favorite cookbook to gift. The recipes provide excellent, flavorful dishes with consideration for healthiness.
I love giving subscriptions to Cooks Illustrated. I love magazines.
Woohoo! Couldn’t believe this interview on cookbooks…I thought I was alone with my obsession~not even close. So much online hunting for recipes today but I think there’s nothing like the real deal~the cookbook open on my counter with my notes and comments in the margins getting dog-eared from use. This selection here goes deep, offering up some amazing recipes for home cooks. LOVE!
Ottolenghi Simple would be my choice. I love playing with spices.
I always give cookbooks with notes on my favorite recipes as wedding gifts. My favorite to give is Dinner: A Love Story. I basically learned to cook from this book in college and the recipes are so healthy and delicious.
I like to give Oh She Glows as many friends choose to eat in that vein. What I prefer would be anything by Ottolenghi as the books are all beautiful, inspiring and achievable. To gift to me? It has got to have glorious photos of great food presentation…if the recipes are reliable Im even more excited!
Israeli Soul because I love this food!
Alice Waters’s Simple Cooking. Simple and so surprisingly good.
I can’t believe this as I type….I’ve never gifted a cookbook before, wow! I really don’t know many people that enjoy cooking like I do. Love reading through all the choices you recommend and reader’s recommendations, too.
I love to gift anything by Ina, but I would love to check out Season– I’ve heard amazing things about it! 🙂
I’ve heard wonderful things about ottolenghi and I’d love to learn more. Also margaret is my favorite gardener blogger.
I don’t give that many cookbooks but perhaps I’d gift one of Julia Turshen’s books. I love her style so much.
I’ve never thought of giving cookbooks as gifts, but I’m asking for one for myself this year, so maybe that will change! I like sharing recipes with family and co-workers, & finding recipes in magazines. Thank you for the opportunity to win!
The food lab.
I like feeding a family because it has great seasonal recipes and ideas for busy families. They are all really hearty and healthy too.
Reading all cookbooks is a source of pleasure for me but the one I am most grateful to, and turn to whenever I need solid advice, is Deborah Madison’s Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone.
It taught me I really could make delicious food and started me on a path that never ends. I recommend it to people all the time, and occasionally even lend someone my spattered beat-up copy – but only for a few days!
Moosewood Cooking at Home, for a beginner cook
So hard to choose a favorite cookbook but my most reaches for are anything Ina and your Bread Toast Crumbs for almost weekly peasant bread. I have been checking cookbooks out of the library lately which has been a joy. Happy holiday!
My favorite right now is What’s Gaby Cooking – really enjoying the recipes and approachable way to make them! Pair with her Gaby Go To Seasoning and it’s a perfect gift!
I am most likely to gift “Food in Jars’ to a budding canner. Canning is coming out of it’s lost art status and that makes me happy! Or a book on making sausage, such as “Bruce Aidell’s Complete Sausage Book”.
Root to Leaf by Steven Satterfield
I love all my barefoot contessa cookbooks. Every recipe turns out delicious, even with room for error (which I’m prone to!)
Since we all thinking about gifts for family and friends, the two Instant Pot cookbooks for my busy daughter, and the Apertif one for my husband. And for me, INA!
I love Ottolenghi cookbooks but have my eye on Israeli Soul cookbook as well.
Ottolenghi’s Sweet… the pictures are amazing! I enjoy gifting this book to others who share a love for desserts.
SkinnyTaste’s One and Done and Ina’s Cook Like a Pro is on my list too!! Would love to win.
I love Ina Garten cookbooks.
These all look so great- look forward to checking out Food 52, desserts, love the cookbook I have.
