12 Days of Cookbooks (!!!) — Chatting About The Season’s New Books with Margaret Roach

I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.

I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.

Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

I love Ina Garten and Melissa Clark but my all time favorite is Nigella Lawson. I have given copies of her books as gifts many times – I love her recipes and her approach to food and cooking.
We’re all about Salt Fat Acid Heat from Samrin Nosrat. And I would love to win one of these cookbooks to surprise my husband with (he’s the real cook in the family!).
I love giving Ashley Rodriguez’s “Date Night In.” The recipes are amazing and I love the concept of date nights at home with your significant other. It celebrates food and relationships and you don’t need a babysitter!
I love your selections! I have 3 of them, including Genius Desserts, Season, and Simple.
I would be so happy to get a copy to “gift.”
I’m a big fan of Deborah Madison’s vegetable literacy. The recipes are simple but inspiring, and so helpful for encouraging one to branch out beyond usual veggies or spices.
The Joy of Cooking is my always dependable source even though I have many other cookbooks too….Joy is the book I give to young cooks in our family. Bread, Toast, Crumbs has been a gift to all of the “older” family cooks.
Currently into the Genius Recipe books but really I just love cookbooks!

My favorite cookbook is It’s A Great Day for a Picnic by Jeremy Jackson ????
I have a tie for my favorite cookbooks: Ina Garten’s first cookbook, The Barefoot Contessa, and Art Smith’s Back to the Table. There are so many good recipes that I go back to time after time. My books are falling apart!
My favorite cookbook is Comfort Foods by Rick Rodgers for Williams Sonoma. He makes all the classic comfort foods exactly right. My favorite is his green bean casserole
I love many of my “newer” cookbooks but I have to say that at this time of year my mother’s old copy of the Betty Crocker cookbook is my favorite. It has so many recipes from my childhood that lovingly captures wonderful holiday spirit and memories that have now passed down to my own children.
Joy of Cooking, Cooks Illustrated, Smitten Kitchen, Ina Garten and of these are great.

Mark Bittman ‘s How to cook Everything. It’s such a lo let resource in how to cook practically anything!
I like to give and receive Ina Garten’s cookbooks. I love that her recipes are simple. They’re usually easy to follow with a few ingredients, yet produce delicious results!
My favorite cookbook would be ina Garten’s Foolproof. It makes this grandma feel so sophisticated! I really enjoy any of her cookbooks. Thank you for the opportunity to win new cookbooks.
Aperitif cookbook would be fun to have, especially this time of year.

My favorite cookbook for gifting is Molly Katzen’s “Moosewood Cookbook”. I love the coffee house style illustrations that go along with the recipes. I think they make the book really charming.
My parents had the Fannie Farmer cookbook, so when I got married I had to have it, too. I actually grab a lot of recipes off the internet, but for the basics I refer to Fannie Farmer, 1980 edition.
The Silver Palate Cookbook, still amazing after all these years!
I LOVE Ottolenghi’s books, and I just learned SIMPLE came out — I can NOT wait to try cooking from it! The Ina books are also staples in my family, select recipes from each book over time are mainstays in our kitchens.
My latest favorite cookbook is Half Baked Harvest Cookbook by Tieghan Gerard. The recipes are fresh and creative; the photography is stunning. What’s not to love?
Fields of Greens by Annie Somerville always provides a dish packed with satisfyingly fresh flavor! I especially love the salad chapter.
I’ve given The America’s Test Kitchen’s Family Cookbook to many new cooks. It’s got such great, basic instructions and information!
My new favorite cookbook is Bread, Toast, Crumbs. The gluten free peasant bread has become a real favorite of my two granddaughters who have celiac disease-thank you, Margaret Roach (A Way to Garden) for introducing me to Alexandra’s book on your podcast months ago! The pull apart buttermilk rolls are fabulous too!
Tyler Florence cook books. The recipes are easy and comfortable food.
My favorite to gift is Christmas is Love by Susan Branch. I never tire of her delightful illustrations.
