12 Days of Cookbooks (!!!) — Chatting About The Season’s New Books with Margaret Roach

I hum this to myself a lot: When my first CSA arrives in June. When the first good tomatoes all but fall of the vine in early September. When snowflakes the size of golf balls drop from the sky. AND, most of all, when it’s time to talk about cookbooks with my friend Margaret Roach, the master gardener behind A Way to Garden
Last year, we talked about all-time favorites, the first books we ever owned, and the ones with the most besmirched pages. This year, we’ve kept our chat to the latest crop: the fall and winter 2018 cookbooks, and we hope our chat might give you some ideas for gift giving this season. Rest assured, there is something for everyone — the bakers, the boozers, the pie lovers, the pizza lovers, the Ina fans, the Dorie fans, the gadget collectors, and more.

I have not had a chance to cook from all of the books we discussed, and there are many others I haven’t even had a chance to page through yet, namely Emily: The Cookbook, which is #1 on my Christmas wishlist—Santa, hope you’re reading. That said, I have cooked from a number of the season’s new books, and I’ve included some notes below.

Cook90: On January 1st 2016, David Tamarkin of Epicurious resolved to cook more — to cook 3 meals a day for an entire month — an experiment he called “Cook90”. In the end, he emerged a better, faster, and healthier cook, and he has since inspired hundreds of thousands of others to take the challenge. His cookbook, Cook90, outlines exactly how to do it: recipes, strategies, meal plans, and more.

Waste Not: Learned about this one through Margaret and her podcast with Top Chef star Tiffany Derry. Waste Not is a new cookbook from the James Beard Foundation and a campaign of anti-food waste advocacy spearheaded by that organization.
Now and Again: The latest from Julia Turshen, who believes a complete meal doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive, that leftovers can lead to inventive/fun cooking, and that gathering people around the table for a meal is a good thing. Organize both by season and menu — a brunch or an easy Thanksgiving. Helpful tips about what can be made ahead of time. Each menu is followed by a section called “It’s Me Again,” which offers a few recipes for using the leftovers.
And last but not least:
Rebekah Peppler’s Apéritif: For Francophiles and beyond, Apèritif offers recipes for both classic and modern French cocktails, along with French-inspired bites and hors d’oeuvres.

America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks are my favorite because of all the recipe testing they do.

Dorie Greenspan loves great recipe making. I am a fan of her desserts and like her attitude!
I love any cookbook by Chrissy Tiegan and Global flavors looks good to me, it’s sounds like taking a trip in your own kitchen through the senses.
Zuni Cafe Cookbook is one of my all time faves. I also dive into my Genius recipes cookbook frequently!
A cookbook giveaway is such a good idea! I would say one of the Skinnytaste books or one of Smitten Kitchen’s.

I love to gift any of Ina Garten’s cookbooks because her recipes are always delicious and her the stories she shares in her cookbooks are so fun!
My daughter has All About Cake, and it is such a unique cookbook for cakes. I love it!
I like to give (or recommend) “How Can It Be Gluten Free?” from America’s Test Kitchen, at least for people who are either gluten free themselves or have friends/family for whom they like to cook and/or bake. Not only are there good recipes, but they also explain why things work or don’t work, so you can learn how to figure things out for future recipes.
I love giving the Half-Baked Harvest cookbook by Tieghan Gerard because the recipes use simple ingredients and they always turn out delicious. I also love What’s Gaby Cooking by Gaby Dalkin. Her California-style recipes are so different from how I usually cook and bring a host of bright flavors and ingredients.

When I give a cookbook as a gift it is usually from a local church or organization

Family Circle Cookbook-circa 1974. It has a section I thought was brilliant called “Cooking in Round Numbers”, which provided menus and recipes when cooking for 12 to 25 people. . I used it for my first Thanksgiving for 20 people when I had I no idea how to plan or cook for that many. It’s held a special place in my kitchen ever since.
You can’t go wrong with any Julia Child cookbook. Fannie Farmer is another go-to for me, Marion Cunningham was wonderful.
Deep Run Roots by Vivian Howard…as much fun to read as it is to cook from!
I was going to say my favorite cookbook is how to cook everything by Mark Bittman. But I have given away more copies of bread, toast, crumbs. So I guess they are both my favorite ????
I always go back to the America’s Test Kitchen Healthy Family Cookbook. The recipes are lighter but still taste delicious and don’t use strange ingredients.
I love The New Best Recipe from America’s Test Kitchen. It is so fun to learn about the science behind why certain recipes work better than others-and I like having an excuse to try 6 different chocolate chip cookie recipes all on a quest for the best 🙂
I love Ina Gartens cookbooks and think my favorite is Foolproof. These all look so awesome.
I love to give my mother a new cookbook at Christmas – she is especially fond of baking, but she really loves a good read, inspiration in the head notes and explanations about why things are done a certain way! I’m loving Red Truck Bakery and all the ones you have listed look great!

I love “The Winter Vegetarian” by Darra Goldstein. No pictures in that one, but I love the variety of influences and being able to imagine what the dishes will look, smell, and taste like!
Your peasant bread and Bread Toast and crumbs have inspired me to have fresh bread for every occasion. And inspired me to love The Bread Book by Linda Collister.

I love Jerry Traunfeld’s “The Herbfarm Cookbook.” It’s been out for years but I’m still inspired by it, and thankful every recipe was so well-tested.
I am really tired of my recipes. Been eating them for far too many years! I really like gluten free, asian, and really just about anything that isn’t what I already cook. Happy Holidays!
